I was shocked when one of my friends posted a picture in facebook where he and his boyfriend were kissing each other as they celebrate their 14th monsary as partners. In a Catholic youth gathering, there was a gay who annonced that the solution for the problem of poverty is LGBT community because they cannot give birth to anyone. The common thing we experience when these situations appear to our notice is culture shock. Especially in this generation, the majority who feel that they are trapped in the wrong body would claim for same sex marriage as they are deeply in love with their same sex partner. There are various cases alarming in the society about sex and gender but how should we respond? Where should we stand between the pro and anti same sex marriage? How is understanding heterosexuality and homosexuality helping us in our view about sex and gender.
Sex is a biological orientation in which one determines his/ her identity depending on the genital he/ she possesses. However, there are also cases that there are persons who have the genetal of a male or a female or hermaphrodite. Through this, the person will follow his/ her identity depending on the functional genital. Gender is all about on the masculine and feminine stereotyping basing on sex. Sex is biological and gender is socio-cultural but the two are interconnected. What is natural in gender and sex when we encounter normal persons to accept that they are concretely male or female. For the gays or the lesbians, psychology judges them to have gender dysphoria syndrome by which they would feel that they are imprisoned in a wrong body. But aside from LGBT identity, there is another issue about the hermaphrodite, a concrete male and female person because of genetic complications. In spite sex and gender, a human person is influenced by sexual orientations: Homosexuality and Heterosexuality. These relate us to attractions. Some would say that if one is attracted to his/ her same sex, he is judged to be homosexual and the other in the opposite sex to be a heterosexual. Sexual attraction and orientation do only mean emotional and physical but also psychological, cultural and social because they are not meant only for mating and having a romantic relationships. Actually there is a problem in how we conceive persons of homo and heterosexual identity. Most say that gays and lesbians are homosexuals but if we study sexuality in the social, psychological, and cultural perspective; we will understand that a certain attraction just dominates to ones personality in how he/ she chooses himself/ herself to be. But how should we have a healthy understanding on homosexuality and heterosexuality. A person whether male or female has homosexual and heterosexual attractions because he/ she connects to others of same and opposite sex. A person is mature when he/ she knows how to handle himself/ herself in dealing and communicating with his neighbor. Every individual because of socio- cultural situations are with the environment of same and opposite sexes. For instance when you befriend with a male or female, it is evident that homosexual and heterosexual orientation is in you but how about persons who are claiming same sex marriages. This means that homosexual attractions dominate them. However, marriage of opposite sex could also be the same because of the dominance of heterosexual attraction. Pope Francis of the Catholic Church would say that who he is to judge a lesbian or gay since they are also persons. Same sex marriage should not be tolerated, because it can create another complication in the society in terms morality and legalization.
Heterosexual and homosexual orientation is part of our identity as a person wherein we relate and communicate to our neighbors of opposite and same sex. Gays and lesbians are to be accepted because those dominate orientations of homosexuality are the points they accept from psychological, cultural, and social situations they have experienced. For same sex marriage, there should be dialogue to let those persons concerned understand what would be its effect on society particualrly on the development of morality. I was shocked but after studying sexual morality I understand gays and lesbians but Same sex marriage cannot be tolerated.
