Nigerians living abroad with expired passport can travel to Nigeria
Rauf Aregbesola, the interior minister, has instructed the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to let Nigerians living abroad to return to their homeland using an expired international passport. Mr. Aregbesola issued the instruction in response to a grievance made by a Nigerian-American citizen named Jamiu Kasumu at the Alausa Passport Office during an impromptu visit to the location.
He said that Nigerians living abroad were free to return home with a valid Nigerian passport.
The Minister said that no Nigerian required a travel document to return home, with the exception of children whose parents were Nigerians but whose identities had not yet been verified in accordance with immigration regulations.
The man stated, "I am using this means to tell all Nigeria Immigration Officers World-Wide to give Nigerian travellers with expired Passport use such passports to return safely back home going forward."
The Minister also suggested that Nigerians abroad renew their travel documents in advance to prevent a rush in case of an emergency.
